The Quesnel birch syrup workshop is just a few weeks away and registrations are coming in from all across British Columbia. The workshop is a great opportunity to learn about tapping trees and also network with other producers - both beginners and people that have been tapping for a number of years. Register today by calling April at 250.992.3522 or email birch@quesnelcorp.com.
This week we'd also like to point out two new producers that are now linked to our site - we welcome Boreal Birch Syrup produced in Thunder Bay, Ontario owned and operated by Dave Challen and Beth Kuiper and Uncle Berwyn's Yukon Birch Syrup produced in beautiful birch stands in central Yukon by, you guessed it, Uncle Berwyn. We thank both producers for contacting us and invite all of our readers to visit their websites linked in the producers section of this blog. (right hand column)
Tapping season is just around the corner - please feel free to send us updates on how your tapping is going this year and we'd be happy to post your photos and updates. Also let us know when your 2008 stock is available and we will gladly promote your products.

It's April 6th and the trees in Thunder Bay haven't started running yet. It should start soon.
Best of luck to all the birch syrup producers out there this season!

Boreal Birch Syrup
It is now April 16th and today we fired up the evaporator for the first time in 2008. We began tapping on April 12th - 7 days later than last year due to the cool North Cariboo weather and snow that lingered on. We continue to get intermittent snow!! We have about 200 trees tapped which will be about our maximum for this year as we are small producers. Last year, we found our 2x6 evaporator can manage just amount that amount of sap in a 10-12 hour day. We still have quite abit of snow which has certainly hindered the collection and transportation of the sap. On the 12th April we hosted a "Sugaring Off Farm Festival" which was hugely successful and enjoyable. About 250-300 people arrived to experience "sugaring off" and enjoyed pancakes prepared by our local fire department. The only unfortunate thing was the sap was not fully flowing; hence the evaporator not fired up. The result of the event was a continued enthusiasm of people to tap trees in their back yard. Happy Sugaring Off... and enjoy the relaxing pasttime of "logging on".
